Nórsku dali meno zrejme starí Góti alebo Dáni a v ich jazyku to znamenalo ´´ cesta na sever ´´.K najstarším používaným slovám patrí ´´ vik´´ označujúci fjord či záliv. Práve toto slovo sa stalo koreňom pojmu Viking. Obdobie vikingov bolo v Nórsku datované medzi 8. až 11.storočím a éra vikingov sa začala v roku 793.
